Together We Can is a new and inspirational organization affiliated with Jimmy Wayne’s Meet Me Halfway campaign.

Here’s what the organization is all about, from its website:

There are currently over 400 young people between the ages of 14 and 21 who are in the foster care system in South Hampton Roads. These children have been placed in foster care by the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, often as a result of neglect or abuse on the part of their family caretaker.

By the time these children reach their teen years it is unlikely that they will be adopted or successfully reunited with their birth families. They live with foster families or in foster care facilities, but, eventually, they will age out of the foster care system. Unfortunately, after having had their lives managed for them for so many years, these teens are not well-prepared for the transition to independence.

Without some kind of meaningful intervention, statistics tell us that these teens are significantly more likely to drop out of high school, and, within four years of leaving the foster care system be:

  • incarcerated,
  • unemployed, and/or
  • homeless.

Research has also shown that teens with usable life and work skills and strong community support can beat these odds.

The Together We Can Foundation is making a difference:

  • Advocacy and Leadership in housing and support issues
  • Programs that teach success skills and workforce readiness
  • Programs that encourage teens to finish high school and pursue higher education
  • Life coaches and mentors to provide ongoing support and community connection
  • Emergency grants for transition needs and in support of academic and career goals

One of the most basic needs of all children–those in foster care and those who live with their families–is good nutrition. You can help make sure that children in Virginia have enough food to eat.
